What is Wrapped Bitcoin

Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum that represents Bitcoin on a 1:1 basis. Each WBTC is backed by BTC held in custody, enabling Bitcoin holders to access decentralized finance applications such as lending, liquidity provision, and trading on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible chains. The minting and burning of WBTC are managed through a consortium-based custody and verification model. Its value is designed to track the market price of Bitcoin.
